Hurricane Katrina was one of the most deadly hurricanes in history. Overall, more than 1,800 people lost their lives as a result of Hurricane Katrina. According to
hurricane science, "In New Orleans, people were trapped in their houses and on their roofs as the rapidly rising water caught many people by surprise. The flooding and widespread damage from Katrina delayed rescue and aid efforts for days. Besides the death toll, hurricane Katrina left many people homeless as more than 800,000 housing units were destroyed or damaged in the storm. Katrina is the costliest U.S hurricane, with estimated damage over $81 billion and costs over $160 billion (2005 US dollars)."And all of the previous effects listed do not even begin to show the emotional and physiological effects that come along with the physical, financial, and economic.
Katrina can be compared to the Hurricane in Their Eyes Were Watching God because they both affected many people and changed lives. It has been 10 years since Katrina, yet its effects still haunt people to this day. When reading Hurston's novel, it can be hard to truly comprehend the effect that the hurricane had on people's lives, but Hurricane Katrina is a real life example of just how ruthless mother nature can be; leaving people dead, disabled, displaced, homeless, with emotional scars.
